Italian Trains Made Easy.

Understanding Trenitalia Online

This page will help you navigate through the information that is available on Trenitalia Online. It will show you additional links (not really obvious) that are available for more information.

The Search Form

This is really quite straight forward. All cities must use the 'English" spelling; not the Italian. Rome will work - Roma will not. Civitavecchia and Livorno will work (same in both languages.) Florence will work - Firenze will not.

Search wierdness when the current date is in the month of May. During that time, you may find that a search for dates in June or later bring back very few results. Do not dispair - this is a normal annual event. June is schedule update time and they simply wipe the database nearly clean and rebuild it. By early June, all the trains will be back on the schedule again.

The workaround is quite simple. Pick a date for the day of the week that you wish to travel from the current or following week. You will get all the trains and the probability is very high that the schedules a month later will be the same. These schedules are for planning purposes and you should always recheck your schedules (a) prior to your trip departure and (b) immediately upon your arrival in Italy.

Search Result Page

The first result page shows the available trains that are within an hour or so of your selected departure time. The only useful link, at this point, is the 'Details' at the far right. We will discuss the shopping cart link in a bit.

The Train Details

Clicking on the 'Details' link, we get more specific information about this train. There is a link (not readily seen) on this page - the train number. Clicking on this link shows the arrival/departure times for all intermediate stops along its route.

The Pricing Page

Using the back arrow on your web browser, you return back to the first search result page. This time, clicking on the shopping cart icon (link), you will get the pricing page. Changing the number of passengers will result in an automatic update of the pricing in each available class on that train.
