There has been much chatter on the various cruise forums about these tickets. This page is an attempt to clarify what they are and how you, as a cruise passenger, can benefit from them.

These are not train tickets - they are transportation tickets sold by ATAC and COTRAL. They are available at most newstands, ticket offices, and authorized vendors. There are two types of tickets in this category, The BIRG (1 day) and the BTR (3 day.):

BIRG

Bigliatto Integrato Regionale Giorno - Integrated regional daily ticket (1 day)

BTR

Bigliatto Regionale Turista - Regional tourist ticket (3 day)

Where can they be used?
Virually any bus, Metro, or regional (2nd class) train within the zones purchased (there are some exclusions). The following is extracted from the ATAC website:

What is the cost?
The tickets are priced by the number of zones to be included. Rome is zone A, Civitavecchia is zone E (ie - 5 zones.) The price for a 5 zone ticket is €9,50 for one day, €24,50 for 3 days (per person.) For a complete breakdown of the zones and the cities/towns included, go here.

TICKET EXCLUSION:
The one known and confirmed exclusion is the Leonardo Express from Roma Termini to FCO. The language in the above quoted section from the ATAC website, and the referenced websites above (including the map), seems to imply that the FR1 line (FCO, Tiburtina, Ostiense, Trastevere and Tuscolana) is included in this ticket.

However, I have come across one line in the Italian version of the Trenitalia website that seems to say otherwise - "Il BIRG e il BTR non sono validi per i viaggi da/per Fiumicino Aeroporto."

Does this mean just the Leonardo Express or the Leonardo Express and the FR1? I do not have a definitive answer for that question at this time. If anybody has a definitive answer, please email me so that I may update this page.
